Imagine taking The Thing, Saw, Henry: Portrait Of Serial Killer, Murder On The Orient Express and Reservoir Dogs and mixing them all together into one movie. That's what you get.
The movie will make you feel physically cold. It will make you feel claustrophobic and isolated. It will scare the living shit out of you.
Jeffifer Jason Leigh is astounding in her role. The brutality she endores at the hands of these men is really horrifying. When she's punched in the face (something that happens at least two dozen times) you can hear the sound of skin on bone. It is very uncomfortable.
Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson are exactly as good at playing shitheads as you'd expect.
The plot at its roots is an old style Agatha Christie whodunnit. But Christie was writing at a time when the implications of violence were a stepped removed from the reality of that. Tarantino does not live or work in that world.
Leaving the theater I felt like I did after seeing The Deer Hunter and Dog Day Afternoon the first time around.
Should you go see it?
Did you like John Cartpenter's The Thing?
If so, yes.
If not, stay very, very far away.
