No, A College Degree Does Not Make You A Better Parent

I tend to  ignore most of the bullshit that comes out of the GOP and conservatives in general, but the reaction to the new academic work Our Kids is so vile that I can't leave it alone.

The study shows a lot of things about how children are raised in America, but two facts have hit the Republican radar:

1. People who have only a high school degree are more likely to be single parents. People with a college degree are morely likely to be part of two parent homes.

2. People with college degrees are more likely to sit down to dinner with their children as a family than people with only a high school degree are.

The GOP has taken this to mean that more educated people (who they note tend to have higher paychecks) are better parents and that therefore if they could just get more people to go to college children would live in happy two parent homes and eat meatloaf with mom and dad every night.

Fuck that shit. Here's what really happens.

1. College costs money, so if you are at least middle class you are more likely to go to college than if you are working poor.

2. If you are at least middle class you are much  more likely to have access to contraception and abortion than if you are working poor.

3. If you have less access to contraception and abortion you are more likely to have an unplanned child at a young age.

4. If you have an unplanned child at a young age you are less likely to be able go to college because you have to get a job to feed and clothe the baby.

5. If you have an unplanned child at a young age you are less likely to stay with the father. Most college educated people also break up with the people they are dating when they are 20 - but because they have access to contraception and abortion don't leave that relationship with a child to care for.

6. Being able to sit down with your child at the dinner table requires free time. If you are a single mother trying to put food on the table and were not able to go to college you are probably working minimum wage jobs. Which because the minimum wage sucks means you are probably working two or three jobs, which costs you the time to have a long drawn out sit down meal where you talk about schoolwork and shit.

So, let's cut the bullshit that college somehow makes people virtuous and lack of college leads to bad parenting.

You know what leads to less than perfect parenting - lack of access to abortion and contraception and a low minimum wage, both of which are things the GOP supports.
