Seeking General Computer Advice

Was thinking last night that it might be time for a new laptop. This is generally based on the fact that this one has been used roughly 10 hours a day or more seven days a week for over three  years and, I'm guessing that if the fan is already giving me trouble and it's starting to get weird about picking up Internet that it may have at most a year left in it.

And, if I buy one now it will be much, much cheaper than if I do so a year from now. Simply because Rome Girl is in America. The thing is that for me to get a laptop here with an American keyboard and an English language operating system I have to order it from the UK and pay in Pounds and also pay a ton for shipping. Beyond that computers are, in general, much cheaper in America anyway. So, the deal is that if I just have Rome Girl walk into a Best Buy and stick the laptop in her suitcase I'd probably save at least 30 to 40 percent.

But, looking through Best Buy and Amazon I notice that computer prices vary really widely and I'm not sure what features are worth paying for and which ones are not.

So, I have some questions:

How bad is Windows 8. Is it worth paying more for a Windows 7 computer?

Some of the machines have 4 GB RAM some have 6 or  8. My current machine has 4. Will having 6 or 8 have a real effect on performance or is it just a gimmick?

There are a ton of different processor options at different prices. Is there a huge difference between a Intel Core i5 3230M 2.6 GHz and a ntel® Celeron® processor 1017U (or any of the roughly dozen other variants?)

Some have touch screens. Is this something that actually gets used or just expensive flashy toy that will be forgotten about in a month or so?

Hedgehog and I spend the evening sipping beers and playing Mario Kart while the rest of the bar watched the Olympics.

I made a joke about this on Facebook and then got a private message that that was the most punk thing anyone could do.

And while I hope that's true, I wonder if it is.

I want to be that guy  from SLC Punk. If you've seen the movie you know who I mean.
