The London Riots

Live conversation between an ITV reporter and a young London rioter.

ITV Reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent?
Young Londoner: You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?
ITV Reporter: ...
Young Londoner: Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you.

UK Riots

You know, it's like governments have no institutional memory at all.

If the economy goes south and instead of putting in policies that help people get jobs and/or put money in their pocket while they are unemployed eventually they will start rioting and looting.

Mostly because having to walk down the street and see shit you know you'll never be able to afford and looking at people who have tons of money while you are wondering if you can afford a can of beans that night tends to piss people off.

People bitch about social welfare systems all the time - but when you don't have effective ones in place shit burns.

France seems to be the only country that learned this lesson - which is why they'll always have a decent social safety net. I mean, Robespierre and Marat were complete dicks on many levels, but they put the fear of god into the ruling classes for years to come.
