In Which Deadspin Attacks Me

So, for reasons, I'm unclear on since I've never bothered with or commented on Deadspin they decided to do an item today calling me an "asshole" - and said the same thing about most Jezebel commentators.

I tried to comment in response and both of my comments were rejected.

So, I just sent this email to the writer and copied it to his editor and the Jezebel editors. I'll let you know if I hear back from them:

Lindy West,

Hi. This is DrunkExpatWriter.

If you want to trash Jezebel commentators, in general, and me by name, I guess that's your right.

That said, if you do so, you should really allow me (and Jezebel commentators in general) to respond. I'm a gold star commentator on three of the Gawker Media sites - which should imply to you that I'm not a troll. In fact, I drive a lot of traffic to your sites.

I tried to comment in response to your direct personal attack on me in your post - but my comments disappeared in under five minutes.

Say what you will about Jezebel, but the editors and writers there have the courage to leave up comments they may not agree with.

Beyond that, every other Gawker Media site I've ever read has allowed people they have trashed in their articles to respond - probably because that's standard journalism practice.

Also, because most journalists aren't cowards.

Love,

Bart

UPDATE:

Ongoing conversation with A.J. the editor of Deadspin. Obviously, you have to read this in reverse order:

I don't know what to tell you about your commenter name problem. And she's making fun of your commenter name. That's it. That's a made up name you use as a handle on a website on which you frequently make comments and and engage in relationships with other like-minded imaginary-named people. It's a light-hearted column about light-hearted subjects.

So I suggest you try to be more light-hearted and call it a day.

Dude,

Lindy was aggressive in calling me an asshole. I just want the ability to respond to being called an "asshole" under my usual username "DrunkExPatWriter" rather than "Bart_Calendar."

Not really proud of anything - was simply pointing out that I was treated like a random troll when I'm not. Asking for the ability to respond to a personal attack is not being aggressive.

Bart

Um, you're a little aggressive? And proud of your star status and traffic-driving and weird writing awards?

Not pissed off, just a little bemused.

Thanks for the receipt, though.

I'm not sure what I've done to piss you off. I've been a big supporter of Gawker Media for years.

If you say so.

Gawker runs writing contests several times a year. I've won them. Granted, it's only 50 bucks, but still...

And, I have no idea why my commentator name doesn't come up as DrunkExPatWriter on Deadspin. That was one of the things that pissed me off!

You've been given paid writing awards from Gawker? I don't even know what that means. And why isn't your commenter name "DrunkExPatWriter" on Deadspin then?

A.J.,

Thank you,

It's just disturbing to have multiple people email me telling me that a major website is calling me an "asshole" - particularly since Gawker Media has given me paid writing awards in the past. I was willing to take it as just good fun until my comments were rejected. As long as I get to have my say, it's no problem for me. (Though I'd prefer my comments appear as "DrunkExPatWriter" and not "Bart_Calendar" just for the sake of consistency.)

Thanks again,

Bart

Hey Bart.

I'll approve your comments.

And calm down, sir.

Angry Birds

Yesterday I discovered that you can play Angry Birds online.

I've never played it before, but after trying it out I have several questions:

1. What kind of sadistic architect creates these structures?

2. Why do the pigs want to live in or underneath constantly teetering constructions of random rocks and boards?

3. Why are the birds willing to be stuck into slingshots just to destroy these pig homes? Is this some kind of urban renewal program?

4. Why, for that matter, are the birds angry? What's their motivation?
