Heaven Is A Place On Earth

Just watched "Escape From LA" for the first time in like eight years.

God, I love this movie and how completely it just embraces being a B movie.

While I love the way Tarantino has found ways to make high art out of B movie staples, sometimes it's just really, really fun to see an actually well done B movie that doesn't have the pretension of a Tarantino or a Robert Rodriguez film. That John Carpenter has crated a film that just exists as a fun commercial piece of ridiculous fluff is wonderful.

"I love this film for the same reason I love the Sex Pistols," I said to Rome Girl.

"I know," she responded.

March Madness - The Divisions

I'm waiting for Rome Girl who understands graphics shit to make the tournament grid. That said, I have picked the 16 teams for each of the four divisions and seeded them.

At first my plan was to seed based on album sales. They I started googling and discovered that record companies are lying pieces of shit and that every big act has tons of conflicting numbers about album sales and that smaller bands don't have any info on album sales at all. Plus a lot of album sale numbers are skewed by "Greatest Hits" albums (this means you Queen and The Eagles)which I don't think is fair.

So, I ended up seeding by general popularity combined with coolness and my overall sense of album sales. (For example, I'm sure Green Day has sold more albums than the Sex Pistols, because the Sex Pistols only have one album to sell, but I think putting Green Day as the #1 seed in the punk category is ridiculous. I did put Green Day as #2, simply by the strength of their album sales compared to the rest of the division.)

The one thing people will yell about is the inclusion of Evanescence as "Metal" instead of "Girl Bands." This was made on a completely practical basis. People nominated too many girl bands and not enough metal bands. I already had to cut The Spice Girls - the number one selling girl band of all time. To prevent deeper cuts I needed to move Evanescence into Metal - a category that didn't have a ton of nominations.

My entire intent was to get as many, many of the nominations in as possible.

Anyway, here they are. I'll have the grid and the poll up shortly.
