Writer's Block: No regrets

If you could eliminate one emotion (anxiety, sadness, jealousy, regret, etc.), would you do it? Why or why not? If so, which one would you choose?

Hate. It would get rid of the Teabaggers, the terrorists and the Republican party all in one fell swoop.

The only downside is that there would be no more hate sex. While that would suck, I could live without it.

Black Candy Store Back To The Wall

The album release party for Black Candy Store's Back To The Wall went very well last night.

The band is in great form and the new tracks sounded amazing live. They also did a great cover of "Keep On Rocking The Free World."

The crowd got really into it and there was a lot of energy out there.

I got a free copy of the CD and was delightfully surprised to find that I'm thanked in the liner notes.

They are doing a mix of a late 90s Seattle sound with roots in classic metal. It works really, really well. They are about to go on tour and are super psyched.

Anyway, the album will be available on iTunes the first week in April. If you like hard rock I highly recommend it.

Please don't pirate their stuff. They are on the way up and need album sales to keep shit together.

You can check out the album release video below to get a sense of what they sound like.

Unpacked My Adjectives

A conversation with Rome Girl today reminded me of one of the best pieces of writing advice I got when I was a young journalist: Try to avoid using adjectives and only use them as a last resort.

That advice has proved ridiculously useful over time - because almost every time you are tempted to use an adjective there is a better way to show what you are trying to say.

Consider this:

"Lightning lit up the sky."

"It was a dark and stormy night."

Both accomplish the same thing, but the first one is a hell of a lot better.

A Jezebel conversation where a woman tries to convince me and another woman that gay men and women represent less than 1 percent of the population.

And then when confronted with stats from me and the other commentator states that gays only exist in urban areas and because she lives in a rural area she feels confident she's never met a gay person in her entire life.

Because, you know, gays always lisp and wander around wearing pink triangles. And God makes sure they are not born in rural areas.
