Civil Liberties

I have an interesting job today. One of my clients runs a website that's a gay guide to Thailand - mostly dealing with where to hire rent boys and ladyboys (Thai prostitutes with breasts and dicks).

While the Thai government permits prostitution, they recently changed the law so that CCTV cameras have to be used in the bars and clubs where the guys pick up their pay-for-gays.

On his discussion forum, some of the guys are going apeshit - mostly worried that the bars or the government will use the footage to blackmail them to their wives or bosses in the West.

Other dudes think the CCTV cameras are a good idea - because there are some real assholes out there who like to beat up/rip off the rent boys and ladyboys. They argue that this will cut down on that risk. They also argue that as long as you pay cash the odds of anyone in that bar having any clue who you are, if you are married and who you work for are about zero.

So, my client thinks his site has to take a position on this and wants me to write a brief essay. He's said he doesn't care which position I take, as long as it's well thought out and defensible.

The libertarian side of me wants to write that the CCTV cameras are an unacceptable government violation. On the other hand, I'm sure there are guys out there who are pieces of shit and if it helps protect the sex workers, I'm sorta in favor of it.

So, I haven't decided yet. But it will be an interesting internal argument until I take my stand.

I woke up in the middle of the night having no idea where I was. I didn't recognize my apartment, my girl, my cat or anything.

Also, I thought I was still in college. This lasted for about a half hour until it all came back into place.

Sometimes I dream that I'm awake, so it's possible I was still asleep.

Either way, it was very, very weird.
