Pet Peeve
I hate it when Americans or Canadians in Europe call cigarettes "fags." It always makes me think they are trying to act cooler than they are.

The next time a dude who is clearly from North America asks me if he can "bum a fag" I'm going to give him directions to the local gay bar.

Do you use the term fags? I think it's more than appropriate, in fact oft part of the assimilation into a new culture if one isn't a traveller/ex-pat status VS landed immigrant to embrace local nomenclature. But I agree there's an element of authenticity that must come with using a local verbiage.

I would never use the term fag. And, in France, "fag" isn't a local term. I could almost see it being used by an American in the UK.

With ya. I know it's not a local term , I was just curious if you used it ...Esp since you have a number of close Brit mates and it's probably used around you as a result/maybe part of your lingo with them. A carryover, potentially.

No. I'd feel weird or like I was making fun of them.

Here are a couple I hate: when Americans say "maths" or "holidays"; the latter in lieu of "vacation" (not as in "Happy Holidays").

Why not speak English with a French (or English) accent while you are at it?

Exactly.

The thing is that nobody is going to mistake you for British, so what's the point?

holidays in lieu of vacation sometimes is just an easy habit to pick up

The math/maths thing bugs me for a different reason. "Math" is grammatically incorrect. The subject is called "mathematics", not "mathematic" - so the correct abbreviation is "maths" wherever you come from.

It's not really a matter of being grammatically or emotionally correct though is it?

I mean, I'd love to hear a defense of "pack of fags" or "can I bum a fag?"

Or for that matter "cuppa" instead of "cup of" which seems universal in the UK but is way bad grammar.

Or, to really take it to the next level, the use, in Liverpool, of the term "Chink Sarnies" to describe "egg rolls."

Because I'd been drinking tonight it just took me 15 minutes to come up with the best argument to you:

While "mathematics" may end with an "s" it's still a singular noun. Hence, "math."

I know but, emotionally, it bugs me.

Also "Chink Sarnies" WTF?

Um, that's what my Scouser (sp?) friends call them...

I lived in Liverpool for five years and while that doesn't make me an expert I never heard that term until I just npw. So that's new on me... I've heard northern English people talk about going for a "chinky" - meaning Chinese food - quite often.

It's possible that Miss Darling and her friends drink enough to make up their own Scouse language.

After all, they know that none of the rest of us here would have any clue if they were taking the piss or not.

I even hate when Europeans call them "fags." I like the word fag just fine, but cigarettes are cigarettes.

I'd do it purely unintentionally. I adapt to idiosynchrasies such as accents and speech patterns. I can't help it, it comes so naturally to me that it's pretty much subconscious. So if I spent a week in Europe, I would have a harder time reminding myself not to call a cigarette a "fag" than most people would forcing themselves to do it.

Reminds me of this:
CUSTOMER: "Pack of fags?"
RANDALL: "Who you callin' a fag, pal?"
CUSTOMER: "No, a fag is a cigarette, mate."
RANDALL: "I ain't your mate, fag!"

When I was in high school, I knew a girl who would randomly break into a British accent whenever she felt like it, and use it for days at a time. It wouldn't have bothered me had she not used it to total stage-queen dramatic effect (anytime she had an argument or felt she wasn't being paid enough attention). That combined with the fact that the boys I wanted to talk to were stupid enough to fall for the British act made me really want to punch her.

Wow, that came out of nowhere!
