Why America Sometimes Sucks
There is a controversy brewing in Illinois.

For those of you who don't want to click - some people think that an item on a public high school's reading list is "racist gay smut."

The item the kids (in an AP English Class) were assigned to read - Pulitzer prize winning play Angels In America.

Luckily one of the people complaining has a blog (that's what you'll go to if you follow the link) so you can comment and tell him how you feel!

He was right on one point, it shouldn't have been required reading. mandatory.

But now that it's optional, they should just shut up about it.

It's about the biggest health crisis of the 20th century from the point of view of the population that was at the time most affected.

It also looks at the politics of antagonism in a very interesting way. The Roy Cohn moments are some of the best parts of the story.

Why shouldn't it be required reading? AP is a choice, not a requirement; you should consider the required works before signing up.

"Angels in America" should be required reading. It's goddamned brilliant.

I think that's discrimination against those of us whose favorite genre is racist gay smut.

Also (I'm just catching up on all this now) it looks to me as if their biggest problem with it is that it's man on man. I guess hetero ass-fucking is okay in a required novel? At least it teaches the boys and girls to release their sexual tension in a way that won't deflower them. Didn't this lady's kids ever have to read 'Clan of the Cave Bear?'

I left her a very non-antagonistic comment and she promptly deleted it.

Oh, but, if you comment *again*, this time she'll let you push your filthy homosexual agenda! :

"Update: 3.13.08 I was receiving quite a few comments that were completely unacceptable on this post. I even changed my settings for comments to where none would be posted without my approval. But I decided to switch it back. I thought everyone should read the comments like the ones I deleted that will be posted here. They claim there is no homosexual agenda being pushed on our children. I say they are flat out liars! They are justifying this book as good literature because it won some award. "

Wow.

I've never before seen the Pulitzer Prize described as "some award."

There has been a wave lately of media designed to undermine public trust of the teaching profession, or at the least to question the rights of teachers versus the rights of students, the rights of teachers in their classroom, etc. It's a little disturbing how willing most people are to distrust educators, who have, after all, been to college and through specific training to do their job. This is just one more in a list of instances.
